Fire and Smoke damage can be devastating! We hope you never have to experience a fire; in case you do, we are here to help and will walk you through the steps to bring your home back to preloss condition.

There are numerous ways fire damage can devastate homes and businesses. It’s destructive and can leave lingering odors behind not to mention the extensive water damage that results from the firefighter’s efforts to extinguish the flames. The professionals at SERVPRO of Kirksville, have specialized training, equipment, and experience that will restore your home or place of work back to the way it looked before or even better!

The first steps for SERVPRO of Kirksville to take your home back to preloss condition.

Step 1: Initial Inspection-

If possible, it’s always good to have your Insurance adjuster present during the first initial inspection but it’s not necessary. We work for you and will work with your adjuster to make the restoration process go as smoothly as possible. It is best if we can all meet at the same time so we can all be on the same page regarding the cleaning and restoration of your home or business. Once the inspection date is set, our Production Manager will meet with you at your home or business to inspect the damages and discuss the cleaning process. They will guide you through step by step, so you know what to expect.

Once the inspection is complete, they will go over the authorization form and a customer information form to be signed prior to beginning the restoration process.

Step 2: Content and Structure Cleaning-

SERVPRO of Kirksville has the knowledge, professional equipment and ability to eliminate all traces of a fire. Besides the easily accessible areas, we also examine wall cavities, ductwork, crawl spaces, and plumbing chases to establish whether they also suffered any smoke or fire damage. We will make sure that all fire damage is cleaned, repaired, or removed and leave your home or business "Like it never even happened." Because that is the SERVPRO way!

After you, the Adjustor and SERVPRO of Kirksville have chosen the correct course for your home. SERVPRO will begin the cleaning process of your home or business. Depending on the severity of damage it may be necessary to box up your belongings and bring them back to our cleaning facility. This enables us to clean your contents in a clean environment while the structure cleaning and demoing is being completed. Once all cleaning is finalized of both the structure and your contents, we will bring your belongings back to your home.

Step 3: FINAL WALK Though –

When the cleaning is complete our production manager will do a final walkthrough to address any questions or concerns you may have. Once that is complete, they will present you with a Certificate of Satisfaction form for you to fill out and sign. Your satisfaction is very important to us and we appreciate any feedback you have regarding your experience with SERVPRO of Kirksville.

It is our SERVPRO goal to ensure that our customers understand the process and are happy they call us to make their loss “Like it never even happened.”

When Is It Time To Evacuate Your Business During a Fire?

9/1/2022 (Permalink)

Evacuation Plan Do you know where to exit the building in case of an emergency?

OSHA's recommendations on when it is time to evacuate a building following a fire, smoke, water, or gas leak. View the full text here: https://www.osha.gov/Publications/osha3088.pdf

"In the event of an emergency, local emergency officials may order you to evacuate your premises. In some cases, they may instruct you to shut off the water, gas, and electricity. If you have access to radio or television, listen to newscasts to keep informed and follow whatever official orders you receive.

In other cases, a designated person within your business should be responsible for making the decision to evacuate or shut down operations. Protecting the health and safety of everyone in the facility should be the first priority. In the event of a fire, an immediate evacuation to a predetermined area away from the facility is the best way to protect employees. On the other hand, evacuating employees may not be the best response to an emergency such as a toxic gas release at a facility across town from your business.

The type of building you work in may be a factor in your decision. Most buildings are vulnerable to the effects of disasters such as tornadoes, earthquakes, floods, or explosions. The extent of the damage depends on the type of emergency and the building’s construction. Modern factories and office buildings, for example, are framed in steel and are structurally more sound than neighborhood business premises may be. In a disaster such as a major earthquake or explosion, however, nearly every type of structure will be affected. Some buildings will collapse and others will be left with weakened floors and walls."

Mold in Adair County

8/3/2022 (Permalink)

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Common Cleaning Blunders

3/27/2022 (Permalink)

Spring cleaning is the practice of thoroughly cleaning a house in the springtime. The practice of spring cleaning is especially prevalent in climates with a cold winter. In many cultures, annual cleaning occurs at the end of the year, which may be in spring or winter, depending on the calendar.

The term is also used metaphorically for any kind of heavy duty cleaning or organizing enterprise. A person who gets their affairs in order before an audit or inspection could be said to be doing some spring cleaning.

 Credit https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spring_cleaning

Spring Cleaning Common Mistakes

Mistake No. 1: Cleaning a Cold Oven

We're not saying you should start scrubbing when it's hot, but a warm oven is easier to clean than a cold one, according to Great Green's LeBow. Turn it on low (e.g., 250°) for 10 to 15 minutes. Then turn it off, spray a nonabrasive cleaner (or spread a homemade baking-soda-and-water paste) all over the inside, and let it sit for 20 minutes. Scrub with a nylon brush or pad and use a sponge to rinse it off.

Mistake No. 2: Washing Windows on a Sunny Day

A gorgeous spring morning may seem like the perfect time to wash your windows. But doing the job when it's sunny out is a bad idea, since the windows will dry too quickly and probably streak. An overcast day is better, says Cindy LeBow, founder of Great Green, an environmentally friendly cleaning service in New York City. LeBow makes a solution from 2 ounces of vinegar, 20 ounces of water and a few drops of dishwashing soap. Using a microfiber cloth (instead of a sponge) will ensure that you don't use too much cleaning solution—it should coat the windows but not splash down them. Donna Smallin, author of The One-Minute Cleaner, says a squeegee will make the job a lot easier too (run it over the windows after you wash with a cloth).

Mistake No. 3: Scrubbing Like Crazy

Sim Fern, co-founder of Mod Restoration in Brooklyn, says the first thing people do when they spill, say, red wine on their white sofa is douse a towel in water or club soda and furiously try to rub the stain out. While club soda can help, the last thing you want to do is scrub—that just does more damage. Keep a cleaner like Guardsman Professional Strength Dry Cleaning Fluid handy, says Fern (and try it on an inconspicuous area when you buy it, before you're faced with a must-treat-now stain). Then, dab it onto the stain with a cloth. Don't scrub, since that will just ingrain the stain further. Keep using new sections of the cloth, and eventually you will get all or most of the wine (or other offender) out.

Mistake No. 4: Spraying Furniture Polish All Over a Table

Statistics are hard to come by, but we're pretty sure 99 percent of people who set out to dust their wood furniture do the spritz-and-wipe. However, if you spray your cloth instead, you'll have to buff less, you'll waste less product and you'll avoid the sticky buildup that can come from using too much polish. (Hint: Ones with citrus oil will bring out the wood's natural shine, and the oil tends to repel dust and dirt for a while.) And if your aim is simply to remove dust, you don't have to use any cleaner at all—Smallin is a huge fan of microfiber dusters, since they pick up dust on their own and don't need spray.

Mistake No. 5: Using an Abrasive Cleaner on Your Bathtub

Steven Natale, owner of Staten Island, New York, bathroom repair and refinishing service Al & Dave & Son, says the reason many tubs lose their luster is they've been scrubbed with cleansers that have granulated powders, like Comet and Ajax. They scuff the porcelain and take the glaze off. Instead, he advises, use a mild shower spray like Scrubbing Bubbles. Natale knows one woman whose tub he reglazed 17 years ago—and it's still spotless and shiny. She sprays the surface daily with the nonabrasive cleanser and (although the directions say you don't need to) rinses it off and wipes it dry 10 minutes later. If you'd rather not spray every day, do what Natale does at home: He just runs a bath towel—a dry rag would work too—over the tub after he showers and the water has drained, since, he says, simply drying the tub is enough to prevent scum.

Mistake No. 6: Vacuuming Up Cat Hair

If you have a pet that sheds, you're probably accustomed to rolling a lint brush over your clothes and furniture daily. But if you've been taking a vacuum to your hardwood floors in an attempt to rid them of hair, chances are you're just blowing the mess around instead of picking it up. Jennifer Coates, a licensed veterinarian and contributor to petMD.com who once owned five dogs and four cats, says the vacuum's exhaust tends to push as much hair away as it cleans up. On wood and other hard floors, she says, use a big electrostatic mop (like Carlisle's Microfiber Dry Mop Pad), which won't create a lot of wind, so you can push the hair into a big pile. Then, pull out the vacuum—but use the wand attachment—to suck it up. You can also use the vacuum to clean the mop itself, or just toss it into the washing machine.

Spring Cleaning

3/9/2022 (Permalink)

We are finally having some warm weather here in NEMO! With spring in the air, it is time to start thinking about spring cleaning. Below are some tips taken from the following blog from Nationwide. For additional tips follow the link provided here (https://blog.nationwide.com/spring-cleaning-tips-and-tricks/)

Spring cleaning tips

Remove water stains with lemon for a natural faucet fix

This spring, make faucets clean and sparkly by rubbing a lemon half on the water stains. The citric acid helps remove hard water marks. Then, use the other half of the lemon for our next tip.

Clean your microwave by heating lemon juice and rinds in water

Cut a lemon into halves, squeeze the juice into 1/2 cup of water and drop the rinds into the mixture. Microwave for three minutes and let it stand for five minutes without opening the door. The trapped steam will loosen the grime, so you can wipe the microwave clean with less elbow grease.

Use white vinegar to beat shower head buildup

Looking for more natural ways to clean your bathroom? Vinegar can dissolve the mineral deposits accumulate in showerheads over time, causing reduced pressure and water flow. Fill a plastic bag with white vinegar, secure it over the showerhead with a rubber band and leave it overnight to get rid of buildup. Just be sure to run the shower before you hop in, or you risk smelling like vinegar all day.

Clean stainless steel sinks with baking soda

Simply wet your sink and faucet, sprinkle baking soda, and scrub with a sponge. If you need more heavy-duty scrubbing power, add salt to the baking soda.

Use newspaper to clean dirty windows and mirrors

Mix ¼ cup of white vinegar, 2 cups of water and 2 teaspoons of liquid soap into a spray bottle. Spray the mixture onto the glass and scrub with newspaper for a streak-free window or mirror. The ink acts as a mild abrasive and allows you to make use of old newspapers.

New Year's Fire

1/17/2022 (Permalink)

Happy New Year! 2022 is here, and we hope it’s your best year yet. The holidays have wound down, but if you’re like me, you have a little trouble putting your decorations away. Well here is some motivation for you: Susan McKelvery with the NFPA says, “With nearly one-third of Christmas tree fires occurring in January, prompt removal from homes is critical. ... The longer a natural tree is kept up after Christmas, the more likely it is to dry out and ignite; a dried-out tree can become engulfed in flames in a matter of seconds.” Yikes! While we sincerely hope nothing like this ever happens to your home, if it does, you know who to call. We have 24 hour emergency services and a crew that is trained to know exactly what to do to get your home back to preloss condition.

FEMA Fire Tips

1/17/2022 (Permalink)

Here in Northeast Missouri, we have been getting some freezing cold days! Between the frigid winds and the snow piling up, we’re doing all we can to stay warm and cozy inside. We have fires going in fire places, candles lit, space heaters running full blast. All this, of course, means we have to be extra vigilant about fire safety! Here are some helpful tips from FEMA (for more, visit their website www.usfa.fema.gov/winter): “Keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet from any heat source like fireplaces, wood stoves, radiators or space heaters. Keep portable generators outside, away from windows, and as far away from your home as possible. Plug only 1 heat-producing appliance (like a space heater) into an electrical outlet at a time. Store cooled ashes in a tightly covered metal container, and keep it outside at least 10 feet from your home and any nearby buildings. Have a qualified professional clean and inspect your chimney and vents every year.” We want your home to be as safe as possible, however we know accidents happen and that sometimes these things are just out of our control, no matter how careful. If disaster strikes, we are always here to help!

Be Prepared

1/17/2022 (Permalink)

You see a big winter storm in the forecast. What can you do to make sure you and your home are ready for it? Well, we’ve got a few tips for you. First of all, make a list of anything you need from the store and get there well before the storm is set to hit. Chances are, everyone in town will be doing the same thing, so give yourself plenty of time to make it through the store and get back home. Make sure you have some backup sources of heat such as space heaters. Also, having some flashlights or candles on hand is a great idea in case you lose power. You’ll need to make sure that you have a snow shovel to dig your way out and some rock salt so that you and your family don’t slip once you do. If you have pipes in any part of your house that is unheated or not insulated well, run cold water through them. Even a small trickle of water can help them not to freeze up. If they do freeze, you not only run the risk of not having water, but them bursting and causing water damage in your home that can be devastating. Make sure your windows and doors are sealed well to keep the warm air in and the cold air out! Sometimes, even with all this preparation, things are beyond our control. If you have water or fire damage as a result of a winter storm this season, give us a call! We are always here to help.

National Preparedness Month

9/9/2021 (Permalink)

September is National Preparedness Month! We here at SERVPRO of Kirksville know that storms can be unpredictable and devastating, so being as prepared as possible is key.

Here are some tips to make sure you’re ready for storm related emergencies:

  • Make A Plan. Make sure your family has a set plan on what to do in different storm situations. It is also good to have plans in place at your business to ensure the safety of your employees.
  • Build A Kit. Storms are unpredictable, and you never know if you might get trapped. Be sure to have non-perishable food items, bottled water, blankets, medication, flares, anything you may need if stuck for several days or longer.
  • Prepare For Disasters. Knowing the condition of your home, the severity and timing of past storms, and having a plan will help you be prepared for a storm disaster. You want to know any risks your property has in advance if possible.
  • Teach Youth About Preparedness. Make sure your kids know exactly what todo in different storm scenarios. It is possible you will be separated from them, so they need to have an idea of where to go and what to do in order to be safe. There are lots of resources available to help you have these conversations.

Download the FEMA app for disaster resources, weather alerts, and safety tips. If you have any questions regarding National Preparedness Month, please call or text 660-665-3390.

Ice Dam Damages Homes

1/18/2021 (Permalink)

Ice Dam SERVPRO® of Kirksville restores your home or business after a storm, so it's "Like it never even happened."

When old man winter blows his was into town, he can leave a wake of damage unlike the storms of other seasons. Freezing rain, snow and ice can all be the beginning of damaged that can occur during a winter storm.   Ice Dams are just one of the ways that winter storms can create mayhem within your

An ice dam is an ice build-up on the eaves of sloped roofs of heated buildings that results from melting snow under a snowpack reaching the eave and freezing there. Freezing at the eave impedes the drainage of meltwater, which adds to the ice dam and causes backup of the meltwater, which may cause water leakage into the roof and consequent damage to the building and its contents if the water leaks through the roof, according to wikipedia.org.

Ice dams occur on heated buildings with sloping roofs in cold climates with deep snow accumulation. Ice dams on roofs form when accumulated snow forms an insulating layer under cold conditions that would cause the freezing point to be within the snow layer if it were not subject to melting. Instead, building heat coming through the roof's surface melts the snow resting on it. This causes meltwater to flow down the roof, until it reaches below a place on the roof's surface that is below freezing—typically at the eaves where there is no building heat. When the meltwater reaches the frozen surface, ice accumulates, growing a barrier that impedes further passage of meltwater off the roof. Ice dams may result in leaks through the roofing material, possibly resulting in damaged ceilings, walls, roof structure and insulation, or injury when the ice dam falls off or from attempts to remove ice dams.

The melting of roof snow comes from the combination of three basic causes:

  1. Air temperatures well below freezing.
  2. A thick layer of dry snow, which has good insulating capabilities.
  3. Heat from the building coming through the roof.

If any of these factors is absent, ice dams cannot form. Above freezing air does not promote ice dams, nor does granulated spring snow on a roof, which has poor insulating capabilities, nor does a roof that does not warm to above freezing at its surface. Ice dams may occur when the under-roof temperature is above 30 °F (−1 °C) and the outdoor air temperature is below 22 °F (−6 °C).

If old man winter tries to enter your roof, call you local professionals at SERVPRO® of Kirksville. 660-665-3390.

Freezing Risk

1/17/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Kirksville Van Call our experienced storm damage professionals to make that storm damage at your home or business "Like it never even happened."

With bitter wind chills, snow, and ice, are all possibilities for damage to you home or commercial structure.  Below freezing temperature are always a risk for your water lines to freeze. Snow and ice storm can create damage to structure’s roof. When the warmth of your home can create the melting of snow and ice, any little crevice can be a possibility to allow winter damage in.  When the melting occurs, the water can find its way inside, causing damage to your attic, ceilings, walls and even your floors.  Trying to keep the warmth inside can be difficult, be sure to use extra precautions around open flame heating sources.

  1. Freezing Pipes- Sub freezing temperatures, mixed with poor insulation can cause your pipes to freeze and burst, possibly causing a water damage in your home.
  2. Roof Damage- Winter storms can easily cause roof damage in several ways. High winds often associated with storms can easily blow debris at your roof, or cause lose shingles to fly off. The weight of a high accumulation of snow could also cause a weak roof to cave, or a nearby limb to fall and tear a hole in your roof. This could cause a sudden rush of snow and water in your home.
  3. Fires- Often winter storms can also cause downed electrical wires and loss of power. Once power has been lost, homeowners must seek supplemental heat from other sources. Things such as open flames in fireplaces or Personal heaters that run on different types of fuel can pose a significant threat if not handled safely.

If you experience a loss from a winter storm, SERVPRO® of Kirksville is always here to help.

Start the New Year with Safety in Mind.

1/13/2021 (Permalink)

Christmas Tree Fire Nearly one-third of U.S. home fires that begin with Christmas trees occurs in January.

A fresh start to brand new year!  It is that time of year for the new. While starting your new year, think about what is around you that you may no longer need.  With advice from SUSAN MCKELVEY at Nation Fire Protection Association (NFPA.com)

“If you are having trouble parting with your Christmas tree, hopefully this fact will motivate you: Nearly one-third (29 percent) of U.S. home fires that begin with Christmas trees occurs in January. Christmas trees are combustible items that become increasingly flammable as they continue to dry out. The longer you keep one in your home, the more of a fire hazard it becomes.”

“NFPA statistics show that on average each year, one of every 52 reported home fires that began with a Christmas tree resulted in a death, compared to one death per 135 total reported home structure fires. In other words, Christmas tree fires don't happen all that often, but when they do occur, they're much more likely to be serious.”

“At NFPA, we recommend using the local community's recycling program for tree disposal, if possible; trees should not be put in the garage or left outside.”

SERVPRO® of Kirksville wants your new year to start with safety in mind, not overcoming the damage that can be left behind by a fire. When your new year starts out in flames, do not worry we are always here to help. Our heroes are ready 24/7, 365.

Water Damage Strikes your Commercial Property.

1/12/2021 (Permalink)

Commercial Water Damage Water trying to take over your commercial structure.

Water damage can strike your commercial property at any time. Water damage can sideline your business, regardless if the damage occurs from a winter storm event or a broken water line. Every hour spent cleaning up is an hour of lost revenue and productivity. Water damage in a commercial can potentially prevent you from conducting business as normal and it may put the safety and health everyone using the building at risk. If you find signs of water damage, it is vital that you act right away by calling SERVPRO ® of Kirksville is here to help. ®

Common causes of water damage in commercial structures are:

Damaged Windows.

In many commercial buildings, water damage is caused by windows that are not properly sealed. If windows are damaged, it can cause moisture to seep inside. This can trigger many issues, including warped drywall and wood along with potential mold growth. Regularly resealing the windows is crucial because caulk may breakdown as time passes.

Damaged Pipes.

Issues related to broken pipes can be caused by an array of issues. They can occur because of changes in pressure, cold weather, and deteriorated sewer drains and water supply lines. Some of the signs of damaged pipes in your building include:

  • Musty odors
  • Loose tiles
  • Cracked tiles
  • Stains on the floors and walls
  • Bulging walls

Detecting damaged pipes is something that can be quite challenging. Normally requires some type of inspection utilizing special equipment such as thermal imaging cameras, moisture meters and borescopes.

The Foundation.

If the gutters of your commercial building are not cleaned properly or regularly, they may become clogged potentially overflow. This will cause water to leak into the property through the roof or the foundation. A common sign of leaks in a commercial building foundation include puddles close by or framing that is wet. Improper drainage systems may also cause damage in the foundation.

Roof Leaks.

A roof that is leaking may result in water stains and potential mold, compromised structural integrity, and fire hazards resulting from faulty wiring. Exposure to snow and heavy rains make roofs very vulnerable to serious damage. Also, if ice or snow is not removed properly, it can trigger even more water damage for a commercial property.

If you notice water damage or related issues, it is best to contact SERVPRO® of Kirksville right away. We can help reduce the issues that may arise and ensure that your business or building does not experience significant downtime and can continue "Like it never even happened." ® 660-665-3390.

Safety First

Account that all employees or family members are safe by establishing evacuation plans in advance, identifying areas outside the building that are designated meeting places. Assign select individuals to keep a list of their assigned team’s names and contact numbers in order to account for their whereabouts.

If floodwaters enter your building and evacuation becomes impossible, move to an upper floor, and wait for rescuers. While evacuating, avoid attempting to drive through floods or rising water, nearly half of all flash flood fatalities are auto related.

Do not touch electrical equipment if you are wet or standing in water.

Do not walk through moving water. Even six inches of moving water can make you fall.

Use no open flames, there may be gas escaping from ruptured mains.

Avoid floodwaters. Water may be contaminated by oil, gasoline, or raw sewage. Water may also be electrically charged. If the water has entered the structure through the flooding of a creek, stream, or river, or if it has filtered through insulation during its intrusion, it is considered to be black water and could be hazardous to your health.

Avoid contact with contaminated items as much as possible. Stay out of any building if it is surrounded by floodwaters. Listen for news reports to learn if the community’s water supply is safe to drink.

Return only when authorities indicate it is safe.

SECURE THE PROPERTY

Contact local emergency officials. If you can, always call 911.

Secure main entrances to building. To prevent any one or pets from entering the structure.

Alert Security company and Alarm company of the situation with the aid of your EMERGENCY READY PROFILE (ERP)

STABILIZE THE PROPERTY

Wait for local emergency officials deem the structure safe to enter.

Notify your insurance agent or Risk Manager to determine insurance policy guidelines and steps to take.

Take the greatest caution while entering your home or commercial structure and wear sturdy shoes and protective clothing when dealing with flooded areas. Always wear protective clothing .

Open basement or low-level windows to equalize water pressure on the building’s foundation and walls

Take photos or video to record conditions of the structure and collections. Make sure images clearly record damages.

Do not enter rooms with standing water where electrical shock hazards may exist.

Do not attempt to operate any electrical equipment while standing in wet or damp locations.

Do not use TVs or other appliances while standing on wet carpets or floors, especially not on wet concrete floors.

Do not turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet or enter rooms where ceilings are sagging from retained water.

Do not turn on heat unless required for human comfort.

Do not move objects or collections without documenting their condition.

Throw away all foods – even canned goods – that have come into contact with flood waters.

Spring Cleaning Common Mistakes

3/26/2020 (Permalink)

Spring cleaning is the practice of thoroughly cleaning a house in the springtime. The practice of spring cleaning is especially prevalent in climates with a cold winter. In many cultures, annual cleaning occurs at the end of the year, which may be in spring or winter, depending on the calendar.

The term is also used metaphorically for any kind of heavy duty cleaning or organizing enterprise. A person who gets their affairs in order before an audit or inspection could be said to be doing some spring cleaning.

Our attendees learned many aspects of a fire damage claims process and how to deal with the aftermath of fire damage. They gained awareness of how quickly a fire in your home or business can start and how quickly that fire can spread. They learned how different materials burn, in order to determine what cleaning process will be most beneficial in returning the fire damage back to preloss condition.

They learned about the differences between a dry or wet soot, fuel oil soot and protein soot. The behavior of smoke, including heat transference, temperatures of smoke and surfaces, airflow patterns, convection and heat lines and the differences in them. This helps us to determine what type of smoke damage they have and the different types of odors that they cause to the home and personal property.

The class also highlighted a homeowners Perception vs reality and how important communication is during the remediation process. By doing so, it helps give the homeowner or business owner confidence in the cleaning process and gives them a sense of order when things seem so chaotic and frightening.  The most important job is helping customers put their lives back together. The Story of SERVPRO

3/10/2020 (Permalink)

"Ted and Doris Isaacson created SERVPRO in 1967 as a painting business in Sacramento, California. With a background in cleaning and restoration, Ted and Doris soon transformed the company into a franchisor of cleanup and restoration specialists.

After selling the first franchise in 1969, SERVPRO continued to grow, acquiring the Bristol-Myers Domesticare Division and its 175 franchises in 1979.

SERVPRO relocated its corporate headquarters from Sacramento to Gallatin, Tennessee, in 1988 to place itself within 600 miles of 50% of the U.S. population.

At the time of the relocation, the SERVPRO System consisted of 647 franchises.

The company's headquarters quickly became a key contributor in its community, and in 1991 the Nashville Business Journal named SERVPRO Industries, LLC, the Small Business of the Year. The company continued its impressive growth, selling the 1,000th Franchise in 2000. Learn more about our Awards and Recognition.

In 2005, SERVPRO Industries, LLC, moved to a new 140,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility in Gallatin to provide more room for expansion.

More than 1,700 franchises are operating nationwide, and SERVPRO continues to grow. The need for experienced, trained, and professional cleanup and restoration experts is recession resistant, and the growth potential inside of a proven system presents an opportunity for prospective franchisees.

With a proud history, a positive current growth, and a bright future, SERVPRO will press on toward becoming the premier cleaning and restoration company in the world."

Have Lingering Smell of Smoke?

2/28/2020 (Permalink)

Your business or home have the smell of smoke still?  That smell is soot that has settled on the items in your business. Often a business owner believe that they have removed the source of the smell, but the scent remains.  When soot stays on an object, even if you cannot see the soot, there will be an odor.

There are two types of smoke, wet smoke and dry smoke. After a fire there will be different kinds of soot residue due to the different types of smoke. Before SERVPRO of Kirksville trained technicians can begin, they will perform a pretest to determine the type of smoke damaged that has occurred. Based on the data that is gathered during testing, the SERVPRO technicians will determine which cleaning procedures are done. This pretesting and the chosen restoration process will protect your belongings.

Some additional information for you:

DRY SMOKE- high temperatures, fast burning- heat rises there for the smoke rises. Heavy odor.

Materials: wood, furniture, papers type textiles.

Protein Fire Residue- discolors paint and varnish. Essentially invisible.

Materials: a product of the materials evaporating not necessarily the fire itself.

WET SMOKE– smoldering, sticky, smeary, low heat. Harsh odor

        Materials: rubber plastic

Let SERVPRO of Kirksville professionals come to your business and do an inspection for soot damage after the fire. We will be able to use our deodorization tools and cleaning techniques to return your business back to preloss condition.

For any questions about smoke odors and soot please feel free to call or text SERVPRO of Kirksville, 660-665-3390.

What you need to know about Smoke and Soot

1/24/2020 (Permalink)

What you need to know about Smoke and Soot

While the flames of a fire can cause extensive damage to your home, smoke is also a primary cause of damage during a fire. Smoke and soot are very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allow us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke can greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Kirksville will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Snow and colder temperatures can turn even the smallest breach in your home into a water loss.

One is not having a safe and correct heating source to prevent them from freezing. There may not be adequate insulation to accommodate the below freezing temperatures and the type of plumbing and the age of the plumbing materials may also be a factor for pipes to burst.

When A Winter Storm Takes Over Your Unionville Home

1/15/2020 (Permalink)

Winter storms pose many threats against you and you home. If you lose power due to a winter storm. Always start looking for other heating options. Please take extra precautions when dealing with new or different heating options for you home.

Small personal heaters that are battery operated are a good option for a smaller area for a short time. Some may want to try gas or kerosene heaters. Please use extra caution when using any form of a fuel feed heating option. Heaters can put off Vapors that can be very dangerous in a poorly ventilated room. Heating sources need oxygen to operate correctly, if they are being used in a smaller room they may not work to their full or correct potential.

When using wood burning fireplaces, wood burning stoves or even pellet stoves, please make sure that the front of the stove or hearth has protective screening and or closers. Be sure the ventilation is adequate for the size of the home and the heating source that you are going to use. Also, make sure that there is nothing around the source of heat that could easily ignite.

When Is It Time To Evacuate Your Business During a Fire?

9/25/2019 (Permalink)

Below is an explanation from OSHA on when it is time for you to evacuate the building following a fire, smoke, water, or gas leak.

Different Types of Soot

9/11/2019 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can get into various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage knowledge and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to colder areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke: wet and dry.

Soot webs are more difficult to clean.

Water Damage Falls into Three Catagories

9/10/2019 (Permalink)

When water damage occurs in your home or business, it can be grouped into one of three categories. Below are the common characteristics that professionals use to classify water damage into these three categories.

Category 1:

Water that came from a clean, sanitary source. this type of water damage can stem from:

-water from an appliance supply line leak

- interior home pipe burst

Even if a loss was originally classified as a Category 1 loss, if the "dwell time" (how long the water sits,) exceeds 48 or more hours, the water would become a Category 2

Category 2:

Water that may contain contaminants that have the potential to cause sickness. This category might have potentially unsafe levels of microbial and bacterial growth. Some examples may include:

- A clean source that has sat for longer than 48 hours

- dishwasher or washing machine leak

- water that has traveled through ceilings or layers of insulation

Category 3:

Otherwise known as "black water." Can contain high level of pollutants and any number of bacteria and toxins. Examples of this Category include:

- Sewage

- Flood Water

- Roof Leaks

Tornado Safety Tips

9/10/2019 (Permalink)

Below is an article from Ready.gov on what to do when a tornado is near. Follow this link to see the original text, and for more information https://www.ready.gov/tornadoes

"Tornadoes can destroy buildings, flip cars, and create deadly flying debris. Tornadoes are violently rotating columns of air that extend from a thunderstorm to the ground. Tornadoes can:

  • Happen anytime and anywhere;

  • Bring intense winds, over 200 MPH; and

  • Look like funnels.

IF YOU ARE UNDER A TORNADO WARNING, FIND SAFE SHELTER RIGHT AWAY
  • If you can safely get to a sturdy building, then do so immediately.
  • Go to a safe room, basement, or storm cellar.
  • If you are in a building with no basement, then get to a small interior room on the lowest level.
  • Stay away from windows, doors, and outside walls.
  • Do not get under an overpass or bridge. You’re safer in a low, flat location.
  • Watch out for flying debris that can cause injury or death.
  • Use your arms to protect your head and neck.

HOW TO STAY SAFE WHEN A TORNADO THREATENS

Prepare NOW

  • Know your area’s tornado risk. In the U.S., the Midwest and the Southeast have a greater risk for tornadoes.
  • Know the signs of a tornado, including a rotating, funnel-shaped cloud; an approaching cloud of debris; or a loud roar—similar to a freight train.
  • Sign up for your community’s warning system. The Emergency Alert System (EAS) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio also provide emergency alerts. If your community has sirens, then become familiar with the warning tone.
  • Pay attention to weather reports. Meteorologists can predict when conditions might be right for a tornado.
  • Identify and practice going to a safe shelter in the event of high winds, such as a safe room built using FEMA criteria or a storm shelter built to ICC 500 standards. The next best protection is a small, interior, windowless room on the lowest level of a sturdy building.
  • Consider constructing your own safe room that meets FEMA or ICC 500 standards.

 Survive DURING

  • Immediately go to a safe location that you identified.
  • Take additional cover by shielding your head and neck with your arms and putting materials such as furniture and blankets around you.
  • Listen to EAS, NOAA Weather Radio, or local alerting systems for current emergency information and instructions.
  • Do not try to outrun a tornado in a vehicle.
  • If you are in a car or outdoors and cannot get to a building, cover your head and neck with your arms and cover your body with a coat or blanket, if possible.

Be Safe AFTER

  • Keep listening to EAS, NOAA Weather Radio, and local authorities for updated information.
  • If you are trapped, cover your mouth with a cloth or mask to avoid breathing dust. Try to send a text, bang on a pipe or wall, or use a whistle instead of shouting.
  • Stay clear of fallen power lines or broken utility lines.
  • Do not enter damaged buildings until you are told that they are safe.
  • Save your phone calls for emergencies. Phone systems are often down or busy after a disaster. Use text messaging or social media to communicate with family and friends.
  • Be careful during clean-up. Wear thick-soled shoes, long pants, and work gloves."

Moisture From Water Damage Can Cause Secondary Damage in Schools

9/5/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Kirksville services many counties in our territories, which includes many school districts. Schools are a major concern for spreading germs, but might also be breeding ground for other microbial growth. The following information from https://www.epa.gov/ will help shed light on the presence or possibility of mold in schools.

Common Moisture Sources Found in Schools

Moisture problems in school buildings can be caused by a variety of conditions, including roof and plumbing leaks, condensation and excess humidity. Some moisture problems in schools have been linked to changes in building construction practices during the past twenty to thirty years. These changes have resulted in more tightly sealed buildings that may not allow moisture to escape easily. Moisture problems in schools are also associated with delayed maintenance or insufficient maintenance, due to budget and other constraints. Temporary structures in schools, such as trailers and portable classrooms, have frequently been associated with moisture and mold problems.

Suggestions for Reducing Mold Growth in Schools

Reduce Indoor Humidity

  • Vent showers and other moisture-generating sources to the outside.
  • Control humidity levels and dampness by using air conditioners and de-humidifiers.
  • Provide adequate ventilation to maintain indoor humidity levels between 30-60%.
  • Use exhaust fans whenever cooking, dishwashing and cleaning in food service areas.

Inspect the building for signs of mold, moisture, leaks or spills

  • Check for moldy odors.
  • Look for water stains or discoloration on the ceiling, walls, floors, and window sills.
  • Look around and under sinks for standing water, water stains, or mold.
  • Inspect bathrooms for standing water, water stains, or mold.
  • Do not let water stand in air conditioning or refrigerator drip pans.

Respond promptly when you see signs of moisture and/or mold, or when leaks or spills occur

  • Clean and dry any damp or wet building materials and furnishings within 24-48 hours of occurrence to prevent mold growth.
  • Fix the source of the water problem or leak to prevent mold growth.
  • Clean mold off hard surfaces with water and detergent, and dry completely.
  • Absorbent materials such as ceiling tiles, that are moldy, may need to be replaced.
  • Check the mechanical room and roof for unsanitary conditions, leaks, or spills.

Prevent moisture condensation

  • Add insulation to reduce the potential for condensation on cold surfaces (i.e. windows, piping, exterior walls, room, or floors).

Floor and carpet cleaning

  • Remove spots and stains immediately, using the flooring manufacturer’s recommended techniques.
  • Use care to prevent excess moisture or cleaning residue accumulation and ensure that cleaned areas are dried quickly.
  • Do not install carpeting in areas where there is a perpetual moisture problem (i.e., by drinking fountains, by classroom sinks, or on concrete floors with leaks or frequent condensation).

Is the Smoke Detector in Your Business Up To Date?

9/4/2019 (Permalink)

Read below about the importance of fire detectors in your home or place of business and follow the link to find out if you are taking all the right steps to ensure your business has the best practices. https://www.ocwr.gov/sites/default/files/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/fastfacts_smokedetectors.pdf

Early fire detection can mean the difference between life and death. The fastest way to alert people to the existence of a fire is by means of an automatic detection device such as a smoke detector.

A smoke detector works by detecting tiny smoke particles given off when something burns. When it detects a fire, it sounds an alarm or activates the fire alarm system, signifying the presence of fire, as well as to the need to exit the building. Under limited circumstances, a fire alarm system may be programmed to allow a three-minute delay to investigate an area where a detector has been activated. During this time, the fire alarm system may initiate other actions such as closing fire doors and activating smoke controls. If three minutes pass without an assessment of the potential fire, Life Safety Code requires that the building’s fire alarm system be programmed to automatically trigger an evacuation alarm.

Developing Your Job-site Emergency Action Plan

9/4/2019 (Permalink)

Read this excerpt from OSHA on developing an emergency action plan, and follow the website for more tips. https://www.osha.gov/Publications/osha3088.pdf

"When developing your emergency action plan, it’s a good idea to look at a wide variety of potential emergencies that could occur in your workplace. It should be tailored to your worksite and include information about all potential sources of emergencies. Developing an emergency action plan means you should do a hazard assessment to determine what, if any, physical or chemical hazards in your workplaces could cause an emergency. If you have more than one worksite, each site should have an emergency action plan.

At a minimum, your emergency action plan must include the following:

¦ A preferred method for reporting fires and other emergencies;

¦ An evacuation policy and procedure;

¦ Emergency escape procedures and route assignments, such as floor plans, workplace maps, and safe or refuge areas; What should your emergency action plan include?

¦ Names, titles, departments, and telephone numbers of individuals both within and outside your company to contact for additional information or explanation of duties and responsibilities under the emergency plan;

¦ Procedures for employees who remain to perform or shut down critical plant operations, operate fire extinguishers, or perform other essential services that cannot be shut down for every emergency alarm before evacuating; and

¦ Rescue and medical duties for any workers designated to perform them. You also may want to consider designating an assembly location and procedures to account for all employees after an evacuation. AID FIRST AID FIRST 3

In addition, although they are not specifically required by OSHA, you may find it helpful to include in your plan the following:

¦ The site of an alternative communications center to be used in the event of a fire or explosion; and

¦ A secure on- or offsite location to store originals or duplicate copies of accounting records, legal documents, your employees’ emergency contact lists, and other essential records."

Workplace Fire Prevention Tips

8/21/2019 (Permalink)

Fire prevention is not something just to be talked about at your home. You should also practice proper fire prevention at the workplace. Follow some of these tips taken from the article "Workplace Fire Prevention: Adopting Better Safety Measures" from the safety services company. Find the full article and more tips at https://www.safetyservicescompany.com/topic/training/fire-prevention-in-your-workplace-getting-better-fire-safety-measures/

FIRE PREVENTION IN YOUR WORKPLACE CONSISTS OF FOUR STEPS:

  1. Implement a program that includes preparation, prevention, and recognition of fire hazards.
  2. Make sure you practice proper handling of combustible and flammable material.
  3. Maintain safe housekeeping practices that reduce the risk of fire danger.
  4. Always keep adequate fire suppression equipment in your work area to extinguish fire before it goes out of control.

Sump Pump Tips to Keep Your Macon Home Dry

8/21/2019 (Permalink)

Below are some tips by Crawford Mechanical Services on how to keep your sump pump working and leave your basement dry. To read the full article go to http://crawfordmech.com/2016/06/16/sump-pump-tips-keep-basement-flood-free/

Clean the Sump Pump

It is easy to think your sump pump can take care of itself as it whisks dirty water and debris away from your home. But the truth is it needs your help occasionally. Remove the pump from the basin and clean the screen on the bottom. This can get clogged with dirt and gunk as it sucks up dirty water. For best results, clean the pump after major uses or a least once per year, depending on how often you use the pump.

Clean Drainage Pipes

While you are in cleaning mode, check the drainage plumbing for any signs of blockages or clogs. Remove any debris in or around the pipes to keep water running freely when your sump pump is in use. If you have problems clearing the pipes, call you plumber now so you can get it taken care of before the waters come flooding in.

Water Loss Could Lead To Mold

8/15/2019 (Permalink)

It’s estimated that more than 1 million types of mold exist, yet less than 10 percent have actually been named. This means mold is very common in both indoor and outdoor environments. While mold and humans can sometimes co-exist without issue, there are certain species of mold that can cause health effects for some people.

If the right conditions exist, mold will grow.  Those conditions include:

  • Water - Different mold types require varying amounts of liquid before growth begins.
  • Temperature - Normal indoor temperatures will promote mold growth.
  • Time - Initial mold colonizers can take hold within one day after being exposed to an adequate water supply.

Mold growth can occur in any home, so it’s important to keep an eye out for situations that might promote mold activity. Roof/chimney leaks, wet basements, or condensation from ducts that dampen surrounding insulation are just a few examples of issues that make a house a prime target for mold growth.

If you suspect mold in your home, call SERVPRO of Kirksville to assess the situation. We have the knowledge, tools and track record to effectively remediate mold in your home or business.

If you suspect mold, call us today at 660-665-3390

What to Do:

  • Stay out of affected areas.
  • Turn off the HVAC system and fans.
  • Contact SERVPRO of Kirksville for mold remediation services.

CDC Mold Prevention Tips for Your Business

8/15/2019 (Permalink)

Keeping your business mold free might sound impossible, however there are ways to reduce the chance of having a mold issue occur in your business. The following tips have been taken from the Center For Disease Control's Website. For More information go to https://www.epa.gov/sites/production/files/2016-10/documents/moldguide12.pdf

MOLD PREVENTION TIPS

  • Keep humidity levels as low as you can—no higher than 50%–all day long. An air conditioner or dehumidifier will help you keep the level low. Bear in mind that humidity levels change over the course of a day with changes in the moisture in the air and the air temperature, so you will need to check the humidity levels more than once a day.
  • Be sure your home has enough ventilation. Use exhaust fans which vent outside your home in the kitchen and bathroom. Make sure your clothes dryer vents outside your home.
  • Fix any leaks in your home’s roof, walls, or plumbing so mold does not have moisture to grow.
  • Clean up and dry out your home thoroughly and quickly (within 24–48 hours) after flooding.
  • Add mold inhibitors to paints before painting.
  • Clean bathrooms with mold-killing products.
  • Remove or replace carpets and upholstery that have been soaked and cannot be dried promptly. Consider not using carpet in rooms or areas like bathrooms or basements that may have a lot of moisture.

Does Your Home Smell Musty After A Storm?

8/15/2019 (Permalink)

For a general understanding of what is considered "mold" and what to be concerned about, read this article taken from the National Institute of Health Sciences. For More information, go to https://www.niehs.nih.gov/health/topics/agents/mold/index.cfm

Molds are microscopic organisms that play an important role in the breakdown of plant and animal matter. Outdoors, molds can be found in shady, damp areas, or places where leaves or other vegetation is decomposing. Indoor molds can grow on virtually any surface, as long as moisture, oxygen, and organic material are present. When molds are disturbed, they release tiny cells called spores into the surrounding air.

How do people get exposed to mold?

People are exposed to molds every day and everywhere, at home, at work, at school, both indoors and out. Molds are generally not harmful to healthy humans.

Inhalation is considered the primary way that people are exposed to mold. Mold spores and fragments can become airborne and get into the air we breathe. People may also be exposed to mold through the skin. Workers should be properly protected with safety equipment when remediating, or cleaning up mold after a disaster. In some cases, people may be exposed to mold through their diet.

What are the most common forms of mold?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the most common indoor molds are:

What can I do to get rid of mold in my home?

According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), residents can do any of the following to prevent, and or get rid of, mold in their homes:

  • Keep your house clean and dry.
  • Fix water problems, such as roof leaks, wet basements, and leaking pipes or faucets.
  • Make sure your home is well ventilated, and always use ventilation fans in bathrooms and kitchens.
  • If possible, keep humidity in your house below 50 percent, by using an air conditioner or dehumidifier.
  • Avoid using carpeting in areas of the home that may become wet, such as kitchens, bathrooms, and basements.
  • Dry floor mats regularly.

the SERVPRO Story

3/27/2019 (Permalink)

If you have ever wondered where our company SERVPRO was originally founded, please read the following blog post taken from our Corporate website:

"Ted and Doris Isaacson launched SERVPRO in 1967 as a painting business in Sacramento, Calif. With a background in cleaning and restoration, however, Ted and Doris soon transformed the company into a franchisor of cleanup and restoration specialists.

After selling its first Franchise in 1969, SERVPRO continued to grow, acquiring the Bristol-Myers Domesticare Division and its 175 Franchises in 1979.

SERVPRO relocated the corporate headquarters from Sacramento to Gallatin, TN, in 1988 in a strategic move to place itself within 600 miles of 50% of the U.S. population.

At the time of the relocation, the SERVPRO System consisted of 647 Franchises.

SERVPRO Corporate quickly became a key contributor in its community, and in 1991 the Nashville Business Journal named SERVPRO the Small Business of the Year. In the meantime the company continued its impressive growth, selling the 1,000th Franchise in 2000. Learn more about our Awards and Recognition.

In 2005, SERVPRO moved to a 140,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art facility in Gallatin to provide more room for expansion.

More than 1,700 Franchises are operating nationwide, and SERVPRO continues to grow. The need for experienced, trained and professional cleanup and restoration experts is recession resistant, and the growth potential inside of a proven system presents an opportunity for prospective Franchisees.

With a proud history, a successful present and a bright future, SERVPRO will press on toward becoming the premier cleaning and restoration company in the world."

Spring Cleaning is in the Air

3/27/2019 (Permalink)

Different Types of Smoke/Soot

2/21/2019 (Permalink)

When soot remains on an object, even if the soot is not visible, there will still be an odor associated with the soot. Often after a customer believes they have removed the source of a smell; the smell will remain.

Leave it to our professionals to come in and inspect your home for soot damage after a fire. We will be able to use our advanced cleaning techniques, combined with our deodorization tools to return your home to a preloss condition.

If you have any questions about the process of removing smoke odor from your home or business, please give us a call at 660-665-3390 today!

Identifying the Possibility of Black Mold

1/18/2019 (Permalink)

If left untreated, black mold may cause serious health issues to you or your loved ones. Learning the potential signs of black mold can help save you from the possibility of health risks.

Water Damages – A leading cause of black mold comes from water damages that were left untreated. Look for areas where there might be previous water damages, or places where moisture might be elevated such as basements and bathrooms.

Patches – Look for patches of black mold on different surfaces. Black mold will begin growing in a circular patter until it begins to spread. Also check to see if it is still wet, leaving it with a slimy looking appearance, or if it has a dustier appearance meaning that the area has now dried.

If you suspect there might be black mold in your home, the first step to take would be to have an Industrial Hygienist come and collect samples to determine if you do indeed have mold in your home, as well as what type. Once it has been determined that there is mold in your home, SERVPRO of Kirksville will be able to come in take measures to remediate the mold and make your problem “Like it never even happened.”

Help Prevent a Pipe Burst in Your Macon Home Today

1/17/2019 (Permalink)

This time of year is the hardest time on your pipes. Not having them properly insulated and below freezing temperatures can cause the water in your pipes to freeze and expand, causing the pipes to burst. To keep from having a disaster like this affect your home, follow some of these steps:

  1. If you will be out of your home for an extended time, set your thermostat above 50 degrees to insure nothing insider your home will freeze.
  2. Allow your faucets to drip slightly. Having your faucet open slightly will allow the pressure caused from water freezing in your pipes to escape instead of bursting your pipes.
  3. Add extra insulation to exterior pipes. You can purchase foam rubber or fiberglass sleeves that fit around pipes to decrease the chance that your pipes will freeze.

Following these steps will help greatly lower your risk of pipes freezing in your home. If you do still experience a pipe burst in your home, we are always here to help at 660-665-3390.

When a Winter Storm Knocks Out Power in Your Milan Home

1/17/2019 (Permalink)

When a winter storm knocks your power out, you will need to use other sources for supplemental heat. When using these alternative sources, please keep in mind the dangers associated with them.

Open flames such as fire places need to have screens and adequate ventilation. You also need to make sure nothing is placed around the fireplace that could ignite.

Small kerosene or other gas heaters also poses potential threats. Be careful not to put the heaters in an area that would cause a trip hazard that could quickly ignite the surrounding area. Poor ventilation is also an important concern with dealing with these types of heaters. As the heaters burn they consume oxygen, and when placed in a small room with no ventilation this could pose a significant threat.

What to Expect During the SERVPRO Fire Remediation Process

1/17/2019 (Permalink)

When you experience fire or smoke damage to your home you might not be sure what steps to take next. Once the fire department has left and you have called SERVPRO of Kirksville, the next steps are used as a guideline to ensure your home is returned to preloss condition:

  1. Initial Inspection- Our trained Production Manager will come inspect your home for damages and see how intensely the fire/smoke affected your home and determine with you and/or your adjuster what steps need to be taken next.
  2. Structure/Content Clean- Depending on what has been determined in step one, SERVPRO will start the process of cleaning and restoring your home and/or contents to its preloss condition. This could include cleaning walls and ceilings, personal belongings, ducts, etc.
  3. Final Walk-through- Once all worked has been completed and your home has been restored to its preloss condition, our Production Manager will perform a final walk through with you to ensure your complete satisfaction before gathering payment from the appropriate parties.

It is our hope that knowing a little about the process will help ease your mind as our technicians work diligently to make your fire damage “Like it never even happened.”

Cleaning Your Personal Belongings During a Fire Restoration

1/17/2019 (Permalink)

During a residential fire restoration, our Production Manager will meet with you and/or your adjuster to decide how best to handle your restoration. Sometimes it is deemed that SERVPRO of Kirksville need to perform what’s called a “Pack-Out.”

A Pack-Out is when our technicians carefully pack some of your personal belongings back to our warehouse to be properly cleaned. We take lengthy steps to ensure that your belongings are being handled with the upmost care. We always inventory and photograph each item to ensure there is an adequate record of your belongings throughout this process.

Often repairs or additional cleaning will need to be performed on your home and packing out some of your items allows our technicians to take more care with cleaning of your personal belongings, as well as ensures that your belongings stay clean through any reconstruction that may needed.

If you have any questions regarding our restoration processes or what to in the event of fire damage in your home, please call or text us at 660-665-3390 today!

Possible Threats to Your Home This Winter

1/17/2019 (Permalink)

Are you prepared for the possible threats of a winter storm this year? Although you may not realize, winter storms can be very hard on your home. Below are some possible effects that a winter storm might have on your home:

Things such as open flames in fire places or Personal heaters that run on different types of fuel can pose a significant threat if not handled safely.

Hopefully this knowledge will help keep you safe this winter storm season, however if you experience a loss from a winter storm, SERVPRO of Kirksville is always here to help. Call or text us at 660-665-3390 today!

Brookfield Smoke & Soot Damage

10/29/2018 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Kirksville will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Does Your Adair County Business Have a Mold Problem?

10/24/2018 (Permalink)
